RDTKL Blue Fin Tuna Spreads

Its no secret, trolling a single spreader bar with a few lures placed around it will produce strikes but you need a large bait spread to turn a school, consistently get multiple hookups and put meat on the deck in short order. This is accomplished by using spreader bars, daisy chains and RDT Sport Dredges. Reel Draggin' Tackle offers complete trolling spread solutions for the price you pay for a single bar at some tackle shops.

The 7-Line spread was specifically designed to get maximum performance from the fewest number of lines. When hunting BFT it is best to cover the entire water column. You need lines on top, way back and down deep. This spread covers it all and is the spread we deploy every trip out looking for BFT.
- On a small spread like this, consistency and action are what is important. Reel Draggin' Tackle recommends that all of the lines complement each other. It is very important to cover the entire water column. Deep lines are essential, slow trolling at 3 to 5 Kts is common.
- Over the years we learn time and again how important a consistent spread is to generate multiple hook ups. This is why when you surf our store you see similar color and size patterns in all of our lures and rigs. When purchasing this spread, you can tell us what pattern you would like and we'll make sure your spread is consistent. If you are not sure about color, email us. We can tell you what has been reported to us as the most effective colors for your area.
- Run your long Rigger lines the furthest back. How far back depend on your area and how boat shy they are. DELMARVA to Hatteras it is common for the long lines to be back 600 to 900 feet.
- Deep Lines are usually run using down riggers or deep running planers. The main line is run out about 100 feet attached to the down rigger or planer and sent to about 60 feet. With a down rigger, we often slow the boat and go deeper.

Slow trolling for Tuna (2 to 3kts) is not new for many areas. However off the East Coast of the USA, its not a normal sight. That is until Reel Draggin' Tackle introduced the Sport Dredge as well as several other slow trolling rigs designed specifically for those stuborn Blue Fin Tuna down deep. We started slow trolling for big blue fin and perfecting the RDTKL Sport Dredge and other deep Draggin' Lures over the past five years. In 2007 & 8 I did several Offshore Seminars at fishing clubs, and introduced the tactic during our at Sea Seminars. Many just couldn't comprehend trolling for tuna at anything less than 5kts. In 2008, it is just about the only way you could consistantly hook into BIG Blue Fin that were hugging the cool water on the bottom. The RDTKL Sport Dredge has proven to be MUST have tackle.

The past few years we have really put the dredge to the test, with the help of Anglers like Capt Tom on the Sea Shell, and Capt's Joe and Mike on the Muff Diver. Their input has resulted in a few changes that are in place and shipping now. I have highlighted the changes below.

The Reel Draggin' Tackle Umbrella Sport Dredge is a 9 " diameter heavy duty six arm umbrella rig. It is fitted with six teaser lines on the tips. Each teaser line is 16 inches long and fitted with two artificial 4" to 6" baits. The center line is also sixteen inches of either 130# or 200# Momoi Blue Diamond line and fitted with two matching artificial baits. The last bait in this line has a ball bearing coast lock swivel for connecting your stinger of choice, or simply run it as a teaser. Each kit comes with a matching stinger.

The Sport Dredge was designed to be pulled as a hooked bait. The small diameter dredge and light weight squid make these excellent choices to run from the corner positions. To be successfull on deep blue fin, you have to get the rig deep. We have been slow trolling at 2 to 3Kts, lowering the dredges down to below 100 feet. Ya need to get the dredge down to the fish. Don't hesitate to pull the boat out of gear as you go over the fish. If you don't hook up, slowly increase speed to 3kts. This causes the dredge to race for the surface, which can draw some very hard strikes.
