RDTKL
5-Line Rock Fish Spread by Capt Ken Lahr

Its no secret when it comes to trolling for Striped Bass (Rock Fish) Umbrella Parachute rigs, Daisy Chains, Tandem Parachute rigs and solo Parachutes rule. They account for more fish brought over the rail than any other set of lures, that's a fact, period. This is why you will only see parachute rigs on our site; rigged solo, in tandem, in a daisy chain or as part of an umbrella rig.

A 5-line spread is considered a small spread by most bay trolling standards. This spread assumes that you are trolling all boat rods, no planer boards or you have outriggers for one or two lines or a single otter board to get one line further off the beam.

Rainbow Jet

This is a beginner or small boat spread. Most anglers start here when first getting into fishing for Striped Bass. I know many bay anglers today that swear that this is all they need. On a small spread like this, consistency and high production rigs like Tandem and Umbrella rigged Parachutes are important.
This spread consists of Tandem rigged 12oz and 4oz Pacman Parachute rigs, Umbrella rigs and a Chugger Daisy chain. The combination of these lines will cover the water column.
If you have downriggers, we would recommend that you use them on the short umbrella rigs. Set them for 30 feet deep and run the line lengths back as indicated. The longer line will be slightly deeper then the short line.
Exact line length will change with type of boat and sea conditions. You will have to experiment to determine what works best. What is important is that when a line gets hit, you can put another one back out at the exact distance. This is where our Line Counter Bay Trolling reels come in handy. If you don't have a line counter reel, you will have to come up with a method like counting the number of times the bar on a level wind moves across the reel, or mark your line every 25 feet. No matter what method you choose, you will need a note pad to keep it all straight!
